What is it and why does it appear in high-performance contexts?

Competitive anxiety is an intense activation of the body and mind in response to evaluation, comparison, or result-driven pressure. It doesn’t only occur in sports; it also appears in civil-service or competitive exams, tests, auditions, sales, professional gaming, or any environment where performance is measured. In moderate doses it can sharpen attention; when it overflows, physical symptoms take center stage, interfere with execution and, if ignored, tend to become more frequent and harder to manage.

How the body works under pressure

Faced with a threat (real or perceived), the nervous system activates the fight-or-flight response. Heart rate increases, breathing speeds up, muscles tense and energy is redirected to the essentials for performance. This design helped us survive; the problem arises when that response turns on too much, too quickly, or for too long in situations that require precision, creativity or calm.

Physical symptoms you shouldn’t overlook

The gut–brain axis is sensitive to stress. When blood is diverted away from digestion to “perform,” discomfort appears which, if ignored, can become anticipatory and condition you before each event.

Skin and temperature

  • Cold sweating, clammy hands, facial flushing.
  • Chills or a sensation of heat without fever.

The body attempts to thermoregulate in a context of high activation. It isn’t dangerous by itself, but it’s a load signal you can use to intervene in time.

Neurological and sensory

  • Dizziness, tunnel vision, ringing in the ears.
  • Tingling in the limbs or lips.
  • Hypervigilance: everything seems urgent or threatening.

When the system saturates, perception narrows. This can help you react quickly, but it impairs complex decision-making and reading the context.

Distinguishing normal nerves from warning signs

  • Duration: “functional” nerves tend to decrease after the first minutes of action; if they persist or worsen, take note.
  • Interference: if your symptoms block skills you master, it’s a sign of overload.
  • Recovery: if after the event it takes hours to “return to baseline,” adjustments are needed.
  • History: if new chest pain, fainting, or symptoms you haven’t had before appear, prioritize getting checked.

Factors that trigger or maintain anxiety in competition

  • Insufficient preparation or preparation that’s unrealistic for the demand.
  • Goals focused only on the outcome and not on the process.
  • Lack of pre- and post-performance routines.
  • Sleep deprivation, dehydration, consumption of caffeine or stimulants.
  • Catastrophic interpretations of normal sensations of effort.
  • Previous experiences of “choking” that were not processed.

What happens if you ignore the symptoms

Ignoring physical signals usually makes the circuit more reactive. The brain learns that “there is danger” and turns the alarm on earlier and with more intensity. In addition, you can fall into avoidance patterns: you arrive earlier and over-warm-up, repeat rigid rituals or postpone decisions. Train pressure as you train technique. Simulate a crowd, time limits or noise. The goal is for your body to learn it can activate and then return to baseline.

Design 5- to 10-minute pre- and post-performance rituals: breathing, mobility, review of process goals and a closure that marks “end of task.” Predictability reduces uncertainty.

Physiological hygiene

  • Consistent sleep: 7 to 9 hours, regular schedules.
  • Hydration and carbohydrate/protein intake according to your discipline.
  • Limit stimulants 6 to 8 hours before competing if you are sensitive.

Cognitive work

Identify trigger thoughts and practice alternative responses. Cognitive-behavioral therapy, attention training and biofeedback can accelerate learning.

When to consult a professional

  • Chest pain, fainting, severe breathing difficulty or new neurological symptoms.
  • Repeated panic attacks that prevent you from competing or studying.
  • Increasing use of alcohol, stimulants or drugs to “control” the situation.
  • Sustained impact on sleep, appetite or mood.

How to involve your team or environment

Sharing early signals and agreed strategies with coaches, teammates or family reduces pressure. Myths that complicate things further

  • “If you’re nervous it’s because you’re not ready.” Preparation and nerves can coexist; the key is managing them.
  • “Anxiety goes away if you ignore it.” It usually grows with avoidance; gradual exposure works better.
  • “Only the weak feel anxiety.” It’s a human response. Strength is in recognizing and training it.
  • “Breathing is wasting time.” Two well-used minutes can save you decisive errors.
