Transcription Resources available for the future

The future for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can be uncertain in many ways, but proper planning and knowledge of available resources can make a big difference in their quality of life.

In this session, we will explore the resources and supports that are available to people with autism and their families, with a focus on planning for the future.

Planning for the Future

Planning for the future involves a number of key considerations:

  • Education and School Transition:Quality education is critical to the development of individuals with ASD. Planning for the future should include transition from school education to the post-school world, considering special education programs and support services.
  • Housing: Choosing an appropriate living environment is essential. Options include supervised housing, group homes, independent apartments with support, and family housing. The choice will depend on individual needs and preferences.
  • Employment and Job Training: Employment inclusion is an important goal. Employment opportunities and job training programs should be explored to develop skills and achieve economic independence.
  • Health Care and Health Services: Ensuring continued access to health care is crucial. This includes mental health services, specific therapies and general medical care.
  • Legal and Estate Support: Equity planning, the creation of special trusts and the appointment of legal proxies are important aspects of ensuring financial security and informed decision making.
  • Support Network: Building a strong support network that includes family, friends and professionals is essential. This network will provide guidance and support throughout life.
