Again, it is important to address the duality of receiving and giving feedback, since to be a skilled communicator you need to master both aspects. Criticism provides an outside perspective on our performance and behavior. They can reveal aspects of which we are unaware. So let's reflect and consider what elements contribute to success in both the act of giving and receiving constructive criticism.

The first thing is that both situations are actually an opportunity for learning and improvement and there is no reason to run away from them.

When acting as a receiver, it is good to begin by recognizing that the intention of the person offering feedback is to provide help, even if the delivery is not perfect. This is a good starting point.

Therefore, when receiving feedback, it is crucial to consider the words that are expressed, no matter how inadequate they may be, as an opportunity for improvement. The most constructive thing to do is to take the comments in stride, without becoming alarmed or taking them as a personal attack, or immediately looking for excuses.

On the contrary, start from positive assumptions and help that person to be more specific and try to elucidate what behavior he or she is referring to. A further step would be to review that behavior and discuss how best to adjust it. Involve him or her in the solution. Remember to apply rephrasing in their responses to confirm that they reached an understanding. This way of dealing with the situation gives whoever is offering you criticism (boss, colleague or subordinate) a positive perception of your own commitment to improve.

Similarly, every attempt to provide feedback is an opportunity to learn. Even if we don't always feel that way in the moment.
