Transcription The Wise Mind
The Rational vs. Emotional Dichotomy
The concept of the Wise Mind, from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), addresses the tension between two extreme states: the Rational Mind (logical, factual, cold, pragmatic) and the Emotional Mind (feelings, impulses, hot, reactive).
Operating exclusively from one of these poles often leads to problems: rigidity and disconnection on the rational side, or chaos and dysregulation on the emotional side.
Integration and Balance (The Wise Mind)
The Wise Mind is the point of intersection and balance where logic and emotion are integrated.
It is a state of deep intuition and direct knowledge ("knowing something with the heart and the head").
In this state, the person recognizes and validates his emotions, but decides his behavior based on reason and values. He does not suppress emotion, nor does he allow himself to be hijacked by it.
Application in Decision Making
Accessing the Wise Mind is crucial for difficult decisions. It is trained by pausing to ask: "What do my emotions say about this?" and "What do the facts say?".
The "wise" decision is one that satisfies logic (is viable, safe) and also emotion (feels right, passionate). It is the antidote to impulsiveness and excessive coldness.
