Glucomannan is one of the most important supplements in weight loss, in fact for many nutritionists, it is the only one that has really proven its effectiveness over time. Regarding glucomannan there are many issues that are important to analyze before including it in our diet.

Below, we will review the fundamental aspects that characterize this supplement, its functionality, method of use and recommendations. Its peculiarities are so particular that nowadays we cannot define glucomannan as a food or as a medicine, being important that you understand correctly what is the purpose of its consumption before considering it as a complement to your food.

What is glucomannan?

Glucomannan is defined as a food supplement, due to its characteristics as a highly hydrating fiber. The fact that it is highly hydrating means that when water is added to it, it will increase its volume considerably. As a final fiber, it is not influenced by digestion, nor is it nutritious because it does not react with enzymes.

Due to the above mentioned characteristics, it has been used in the elaboration of pastas, which provide less than one tenth of the calories of a traditional pasta. We can also acquire the glucomannan by means of supplements of pills, where they must be ingested half an hour before the meals and accompanied of water.

Why take glucomannan?

As we have already said, glucomannan will not provide any nutritional value. The reason for its intake is that since it occupies such a high volume, and does not provide calories, it can be a good supplement to satiate the appetite. There are some effects that are also associated with glucomannan, we refer to reduce constipation among others related to digestion. The truth is that these are just the normal effects of fiber intake. But what really makes glucomannan special is its effectiveness in satiating the appetite.

Negative aspects: Glucomannan may not be so harmless, it should be noted that its high capacity to absorb water can be dangerous, in fact its consumption has been banned for children in some of its preparation modalities, adding that it can cause suffocation when swollen with water.

Glucomannan can also cause a decrease in the absorption of nutrients from other foods, because it limits their decomposition, dragging them in the digestive tract. The same happens with vitamins and some fat-soluble foods, which is why you should measure your diet very well before adding it as a supplement.
