Transcription Research into the relationship between dyslexia and other conditions

Dyslexia, a learning disorder that affects reading, writing and spelling, has been the subject of extensive research in an effort to understand its complex interactions with other conditions. The coexistence of dyslexia with various difficulties and disorders has led to a growing interest in discovering underlying connections.

This session will examine current research on the relationship between dyslexia and other conditions, exploring how these interactions affect identification, diagnosis and intervention strategies.

Developmental Language Disorders

One of the most studied links is the relationship between dyslexia and developmental language disorders (DLD). Research has shown that many individuals with dyslexia also present with language development disorders, which suggests a significant overlap in the underlying processes. The difficulty in acquiring language in the early stages can negatively impact the development of reading and writing skills, highlighting the importance of early detection and coordinated intervention.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Another area of research focuses on the relationship between dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Studies have revealed a high comorbidity between these two disorders, which implies that people with dyslexia may be more likely to also present with ADHD symptoms.

This connection poses additional challenges in the educational sphere and highlights the importance of adapted pedagogical approaches to address multiple needs.

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)

Research has explored the possible relationship between dyslexia and autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Although the evidence is less conclusive compared to other conditions, some studies suggest a higher prevalence of reading and writing difficulties in individuals with ASD. Understanding how these conditions can interact is crucial to providing adequate and personalized support.

Sensory Processing Disorders

Dyslexia has also been associated with sensory processing disorders. Difficulties in integrating sensory information, such as vision and hearing, can affect the way people with dyslexia process written information.

Identifying these sensory difficulties can be fundamental to developing intervention strategies that address sensory and cognitive aspects in an integrated way.

Difficulties in Motor Skills

The relationship between dyslexia and difficulties in motor skills has been the subject of research, highlighting the importance of the connection between the brain and physical movement.

Some studies suggest that people with dyslexia may face challenges in fine and gross motor coordination, which can
