Transcending Superficial Labels

In our everyday lives, when we are faced with the simple yet profound question "Who am I?", our answers tend to be automatic and superficial.

We define ourselves by our roles (I am a parent, I am a manager), our professions (I am an engineer, I am an artist), or our possessions.

While these are part of our lives, they do not capture the essence of our being.

They are external labels that we often mistake for our fundamental identity.

To go beyond this surface and connect with our authentic core, there is a simple and extraordinarily powerful introspection exercise: "I Am" statements.

The "I Am" Practice

The exercise consists of finding a quiet moment, taking out paper and pencil, and begin repeatedly completing the sentence "I am...". The key is to do it intuitively and without judgment.

The first answers will probably still be external: "I am John," "I am from this city," "I am a worker."

Don't fight this, just keep writing.

As we persist, the conscious mind begins to give way to deeper layers of our being.

Exploring the Depths of Being

Little by little, answers will begin to emerge that are not about what we do, but about who we are.

Character qualities, intrinsic values, states of being, core passions.

Phrases like this might appear:

  • "I am a loyal and committed person."
  • "I am a curious spirit and a lover of learning."
  • "I am someone who values peace and harmony."
  • "I am creative and full of ideas".
  • "I am resilient and capable of overcoming challenges."

This process is an act of profound self-discovery.

It forces us to shed the labels we have placed on ourselves or that others have imposed on us, and to define ourselves from the inside out.

By creating this list, we not only gain immense clarity about our true identity.

But we also build a solid and unshakable foundation for our self-esteem.

We no longer depend on external validation because we have connected with the inherent value that resides at our core.

This practice is a fundamental pillar for living an authentic and purposeful life.
