Transcription The nocebo effect: the dark side of mentality
The Mind That Makes You Sick
Just as the placebo effect demonstrates the power of the mind to heal, the nocebo effect demonstrates its power to harm.
The nocebo is the opposite of the placebo.
It occurs when a person's negative expectations about a treatment or situation cause them to experience actual harmful effects.
The Power of Negative Suggestion
In clinical trials, if patients are warned about a list of possible side effects of a drug, a significant number of those who receive the sugar pill (placebo) will report experiencing precisely those side effects.
Their belief in the possible harm activates a negative physiological response.
Nocebos in Everyday Life
The nocebo effect is omnipresent in our lives.
If we believe that chronic stress is going to make us sick, our immune system is more likely to weaken.
If we're convinced we're going to fail at a project, we're more likely to unconsciously sabotage our own efforts.
Our fears, worries, and negative beliefs act as powerful nocebos.
We worry about being stressed, and that very act of worrying adds an additional layer of stress, creating a vicious cycle.
