Principle 9: Hedonism in a Broad Sense (Actively Seeking Pleasurable Emotions)

The ninth principle is hedonism, but understood in a broad and long-term sense. It does not refer to the impulsive search for immediate pleasures.

It refers to the wisdom of knowing how to seek out and create moments, situations, and behaviors that produce pleasant and sustainable sensations and emotions.

It is the ability to manage our lives to maximize our overall well-being.

Principle 10: Frustration Tolerance

Frustration tolerance, as we have already explored, is one of the pillars of emotional intelligence and, for Ellis, a fundamental principle of happiness.

It is the ability to endure short-term discomfort and delay gratification in order to obtain greater rewards in the future.

It is essential for the achievement of any meaningful goal.

Principle 11: Scientific Thinking (having a scientific attitude and not looking for hidden messages)

By ''scientific thinking,'' Ellis does not mean having knowledge of science. It refers to adopting a rational, logical, and evidence-based attitude toward life.

It involves questioning our irrational beliefs and not attributing events to mystical forces or "hidden messages from the universe." It encourages us to seek realistic explanations and act accordingly.

Personal responsibility versus "the universe is sending me signs."

This scientific attitude reinforces self-responsibility. Instead of thinking that things "happen for a reason" and passively waiting for fate to act, it invites us to be proactive.

It reminds us that it is we, through our decisions and actions, who largely create our reality.
