The importance of positioning yourself as a subject matter expert

When facing a skeptical audience or interlocutor - one who is naturally suspicious or opposed to new ideas - the first and most important strategy is to position yourself firmly as a subject matter expert.

Skeptics often filter information through a lens of doubt, especially if it challenges their worldview.

In order to overcome this initial barrier, the communicator must project an unwavering level of confidence in their knowledge and feel completely secure in their role.

This positioning as an authority is not a sign of arrogance, but a prerequisite for a hesitant audience to even consider listening and taking seriously the message to be presented.

How to establish credibility without appearing arrogant

Establishing one's authority is a delicate act that must be done without falling into arrogance or self-promotion, as this could generate even more resistance from a skeptical audience.

The most elegant and effective tactic is to allow a third party to establish your credibility.

Whenever possible, it is preferable to have someone else introduce you, highlighting your experience, accomplishments and credentials before you begin speaking.

This method is much more powerful because the validation comes from an outside source, making you appear more objective and trustworthy.

It puts you in an expert position without you having to say so yourself, thus avoiding the perception of being boastful.

Maintain confidence to open the audience's mind.

Once credibility has been established, the next step is to maintain consistent confidence throughout the entire communication.

With expert status already validated, the communicator is in a better position to hopefully begin to open the audience's mind.

The key is to present arguments confidently and consistently, without wavering in the face of potential challenges.

This sustained confidence helps deflect the skeptic's natural tendency to dismiss the message out of hand.
