Transcription Negotiate Beyond Base Salary

Sometimes, the company may indicate that it has little flexibility in the base salary offered, due to internal policies, fixed budgets or pay scales.

However, this does not mean that the negotiation is over.

There are many other components of the total compensation package that are often more flexible and can be negotiated to significantly improve the overall offer.

Bonuses (Signing, Performance)

Signing bonus: You can request a one-time payment upon joining, especially if you waive bonuses at your current job or to compensate for a slightly lower base salary than desired.

It can be useful for initial expenses such as moving or debt.

Performance bonuses: Negotiate the possibility of additional bonuses tied to meeting specific goals (individual, team or company).

Additional vacation time

If the standard vacation policy seems insufficient (e.g. starting with only two weeks), you can negotiate additional paid vacation days per year.

For the company, the cost is usually less than a direct salary increase.

Flexibility (working hours, telecommuting)

You can negotiate greater flexibility in your work schedule, such as flexible start/finish times, a compressed work week, or the ability to work from home (telecommuting) one or more days a week.

For many, this flexibility is of considerable value.

Training and professional development

Negotiate an annual budget for training, conference attendance, certifications or even paying for part of higher education (master's, graduate) that is relevant to your role and development in the company.

Early salary review

If you do not achieve the desired base salary initially, you can negotiate a guaranteed salary review before the usual annual cycle (e.g. at 6 months instead of 12 months), conditional on reaching certain performance targets.

Specific benefits (Car, enhanced health insurance, etc.)

Depending on the position and the company, you can negotiate specific benefits such as a company car, enhanced health insurance coverage, childcare allowances, stock/option plans, or increased pension contribution.

Job Title

If salary is limited but you feel your responsibilities deserve greater recognition, you can negotiate a higher job title.
