Transcription Common causes of obesity

Obesity is a medical condition characterized by excess body fat. It affects people of all ages, but in the elderly, it can have unique implications and associated challenges. It is important to understand the causes of obesity at this stage of life to properly address this health problem.

Metabolic and Hormonal Changes

As we age, our metabolism tends to slow down. This means the body burns fewer calories at rest, which can make it easier to gain weight if food intake and physical activity are not adjusted. In addition, age-related hormonal changes, such as a decrease in thyroid hormones, can contribute to weight gain.

Decreased Physical Activity

Reduced physical activity is common in the elderly. Older people may experience mobility limitations due to medical conditions, chronic pain, or previous injuries. Lack of physical activity can lead to an imbalance between calorie intake and energy expenditure, which promotes weight gain.

In older age, many people experience a redistribution of body fat, with an increase in abdominal fat. This fat distribution, known as central obesity, is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

Underlying Health Problems

Older people often have chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease, which can influence the development of obesity. Some medications used to treat these conditions may also have side effects that contribute to weight gain.

Changes in Eating Patterns

Older age often comes with changes in eating patterns. Some older adults may have difficulty preparing food or may rely more on processed and convenient foods that may be high in empty calories.

Social Isolation and Depression

Social isolation and depression are significant concerns in older age. Loneliness can lead to emotional eating or seeking comfort in food, which can contribute to weight gain. In addition, some medications used to treat depression may have side effects that increase appetite.
