The second pillar of self-compassion is the recognition of "common" or shared humanity.

This component involves understanding that suffering, failure and feelings of inadequacy are not isolated and personal experiences.

Rather, they are an intrinsic part of the human condition that we all share.

Suffering as a Universal Experience

Recognizing common humanity means accepting that all people, without exception, go through difficult times, make mistakes and feel inadequate at times.

This understanding helps to counteract the tendency to isolation that often accompanies suffering, where one may come to feel that he or she is the only one going through a particular difficulty or that his or her problems are unique and shameful.

Knowing that you are not alone in your struggles and that feeling imperfect is part of being human reduces feelings of alienation and promotes greater connection with others.

Vulnerability and Authenticity as Connectors

When people talk openly about their mistakes, their moments of suffering, or those areas in which they are still learning or don't feel completely safe, it creates a space for genuine connection.
