Transcription Discovering the [best version] of oneself
The search for the 'best version' of oneself is a central concept in personal development, which aligns with the principles of positive psychology and narrative psychology.
It involves a process of self-knowledge and conscious choice to live in a more authentic and aligned way with one's values and aspirations.
Life as Narrative and Multiple Versions
Narrative psychology proposes that we understand and live our lives as a story or a series of stories that we tell ourselves and others. We do not experience events in isolation.
Rather, we connect them in a meaningful plot.
Within this narrative, there are multiple "versions" of ourselves. Just as a song can have different versions or a movie a "remake", we can also manifest different facets of our personality and behavior in different times or contexts of life.
We may be more fun, studious, restless or patient at different times.
Identifying the "Preferred Identity".
The idea is to identify when we behave in a way we like, when we are aligned with our values and when we are satisfied with the way we are. This is known as the "preferred identity".
A useful exercise for this is to review personal photographs and choose those that illustrate times when we liked how we were being, not necessarily because of physical appearance.
But by the quality that manifested itself (loving, supportive, joyful). It is about identifying those scenes of the "movie of our life" that portray us as we really want to be.
Being the Best Possible Version of Yourself
The goal is not to try to be someone else, which is impossible. But to be the best possible version of who you already are.
