Transcription Impact of negative internal dialogue

The internal dialogue, that continuous conversation we have with ourselves, has considerable power over our emotional state and general well-being.

When this dialogue becomes predominantly negative, it can have detrimental consequences, undermining trust and generating discomfort.

Rumination and its Effects

A common manifestation of negative self-talk is rumination, which consists of mentally reviewing negative scenarios, past mistakes or worries in a repetitive and obsessive manner.

This pattern of "going around" problems, far from solving them, tends to intensify unpleasant emotions.

For example, after a perceived mistake in a meeting, the person may spend hours or days reliving the situation, criticizing himself or herself, and anticipating negative consequences ("I can't believe I said that stupid thing").

This constant rumination keeps the discomfort active.

Generation of Stress, Anxiety and Depression

Persistent negative self-talk is a significant factor in the generation and maintenance of stress, anxiety and depressive symptoms.

Self-critical, pessimistic or catastrophic thoughts feed these emotions, creating a cycle in which negative thinking exacerbates emotional distress, which in turn reinforces negative thoughts.

In addition, this type of self-talk can lead to low self-esteem and a distorted view of one's own abilities and the world.

The Inner Critic as a Distorting Lens

Much of the negative internal dialogue comes from what is known as the "inner critic" or
