Transcription Conscious connection with nature

Scientific research clearly demonstrates that spending time in nature or in environments that mimic nature can dramatically improve overall well-being.

This practice, when done mindfully, becomes a powerful mindfulness tool.

Benefits of Contact with Natural Environments

It is essential to recognize that, although we live in an increasingly technological world and are often distracted by electronic devices, our bodies and minds have important needs that nature can meet to keep us healthy and happy.

Studies have indicated that people who spend more time in green spaces show evidence of lower levels of frustration and greater states of meditation or calm.

Research conducted in the United Kingdom asked participants to walk for twenty-five minutes through three different areas: urban shopping streets, green spaces and a busy shopping district.

Indicators such as frustration, engagement, alertness and meditation were measured. Results showed that when moving from the urban area to green spaces, participants experienced a reduction in frustration and an increase in meditative states.

Conversely, when moving from green space to the busy business district, engagement and alertness dominated, suggesting a higher level of stimulation and possible stress.

Accessibility of Nature

It is not necessary to make long excursions to remote mountains to benefit from the contact with nature.

Regardless of where we live, there is likely to be a park or similar environment nearby.

Even many workplaces, known as "office parks," invest in creating landscaped environments so employees can relax, minimize stress and focus better when returning to work.

Conscious Practices in Nature

When you are in a natural environment, it is equally important what we do there.

You can practice previously learned mindfulness tools, such as conscious breathing, meditation on the leaves, or simply paying full attention to the present moment, to sounds and to what you see.

Establishing the habit of enjoying nature, whether once a week or even once a month, can improve health and help focus on other important aspects of life.

It is recommended to look for a nearby green space, either in the place of residence or work, and dedicate time to be there, preferably alone, to have the opportunity to perform breathing and meditation practices.
