Managing negative emotions effectively is a crucial technique for improving well-being, but it is essential to understand that the goal is not their total elimination. But its reduction and proper management.

Negative emotions are an inherent part of the human experience and serve important functions.

Accept and Feel, Don't Eliminate

Positive psychology, when dealing with negative emotions, does not propose their eradication.

Emotions are there to be felt, experienced, expressed and understood. Trying to suppress or completely eliminate negative emotions is not only unrealistic.

It can be counterproductive.

These emotions become problematic when they become chronic, generate bitterness, begin to destroy aspects of life or negatively affect physical and mental health and relationships (for example, when anger turns into constant rage or unforgiveness becomes a persistent grudge).

The focus, therefore, is on reducing their impact and duration, not their existence.

Focusing on the Positive as a Counterbalance

A fundamental strategy to reduce the impact of negative emotions is to actively put the focus on the good things in life.

Although this idea is well known, putting it into practice requires a conscious effort, especially in times of adversity.

When you are going through a difficult situation, it is important to look around and be thankful for what you do have, to identify the positive things that still persist and make it worthwhile to move forward.

An adverse moment should not be allowed to completely cloud the vision of the positive aspects.
