Self-compassion is a powerful tool for emotional well-being, which is often misunderstood or feared because of a supposed association with self-indulgence.

However, its practice is essential to counteract destructive self-criticism and foster a healthier and more balanced relationship with oneself.

Fear of Self-indulgence

One of the main barriers to practicing self-compassion is the fear of becoming self-indulgent or lazy.

Many people believe that harsh self-criticism is what keeps them "in line" and motivates them to strive.

This cultural belief that being hard on oneself is the path to achievement and self-improvement is widespread, but often counterproductive.

Thinking that more "determination" or "willpower" is needed instead of compassion when goals are not achieved can generate a vicious cycle of frustration and self-devaluation.

Self-criticism as an obstacle

Contrary to popular belief, constant self-criticism is not usually an effective long-term motivator.

Rather, it tends to generate anxiety, fear of failure and diminished self-esteem.
