Habits are behaviors, emotional responses and thought patterns that, through repetition, have become automatic and are performed with a minimum of conscious effort.

They are not limited to the physical actions we perform. They also encompass the emotions we experience on a recurring basis and the thoughts that arise regularly in our minds.

Broad Definition of Habit

A habit is any action, feeling or thought that we perform regularly and almost without realizing it.

It may be a daily routine, such as brushing teeth, a conditioned emotional response, such as feeling joy in certain situations, or a recurring thought pattern, such as self-criticism or optimism.

They are learned behaviors that are deeply integrated into our daily functioning.

The Habit Mechanism

The formation and maintenance of a habit can be understood through a "loop" consisting of three main components:

  • Trigger (Trigger/Cue): Es la señal o el estímulo que inicia el comportamiento habitual. Puede ser un momento del día, un lugar, una emoción, la presencia de otras personas o una acción previa.
