Transcription The Role of Management in Transformation

Management plays an absolutely critical role in the success or failure of an agile transformation. Their support, understanding and active engagement are indispensable.

Without the support of management, transformation efforts at the team level often run up against organizational barriers, lack of resources or cultural resistance that only management can help overcome.

The Agile Coach must therefore work closely with management, not only to get their permission, but to turn them into true sponsors and facilitators of change.

This involves educating them about agile, managing their expectations, ensuring their commitment to agile principles (such as self-organization), and maintaining open communication aligned with business objectives.

Get Management Commitment and Support.

Before initiating any significant change with a team, it is critical to obtain clear commitment and active support from relevant management.

Agile transformation often requires changes in the way decisions are made, resources are allocated and success is measured, which needs management support.

The coach should have open conversations with management to explain what agile is, why it is beneficial to their goals, and what is needed from them (e.g., empowering the team, avoiding micromanagement, supporting new processes).

If management is unwilling to commit or does not understand the implications, it is preferable to address those reluctances first, or at least set realistic expectations about what can be achieved.

Without this commitment, the transformation is at high risk of failure.

Managing Expectations and Establishing a Stable Environment

It is vital to manage management's expectations of the agile transformation. They should not expect magical overnight results.

The transition takes time, and there may even be a temporary decrease in productivity while the team learns and adapts to the new processes. The coach must communicate this clearly.

In addition, during the initial transformation phase, the team needs a relatively stable environment to be able to focus on learning and adapting.

This means that management should avoid, as far as possible, constant changes in team composition or frequent interruptions that make it difficult to consolidate the new ways of working.

Open Communication and Alignment of Objectives

The coach should act as a partner with management, maintaining open and honest communication.

It is important to understand management's objectives and motivation (what they are looking to achieve for the business) and help them see how agility can contribute to achieving those goals.
