Transcription Advanced chronic stress management strategies
Chronic stress, stress that persists over time due to persistent demands or difficulty disconnecting from alert mode, requires more in-depth and sustained management strategies than simply handling episodes of acute stress.
These strategies seek not only to alleviate symptoms, but also to build resilience and modify the relationship with the stressors.
Cognitive Reappraisal and Shifting Perspective
One fundamental strategy is cognitive reappraisal, which involves a conscious effort to shift one’s perspective on the stressor.
Instead of viewing it as an insurmountable threat, one can reinterpret it by downplaying its importance, focusing on aspects that can be managed, or viewing it as a challenge from which one can learn and grow.
This includes identifying and challenging catastrophic thoughts or negative generalizations about the stressful situation, and replacing them with more realistic and constructive interpretations.
For example, instead of thinking "this is unbearable and will never end," you can think "this is difficult, but I can find ways to cope and I know that situations change."
Developing Active Coping Skills
When faced with chronic stress, it is crucial to move from passive or avoidant coping to active coping.
This involves:
- Problem-Solving: Applying structured techniques to analyze the problems that generate stress and developing action plans to address them (as seen in Topic 13 of the syllabus).
- Time Management and Prioritization: Improving organization and time management to reduce feelings of overload and increase perceptions of control.
- Limit-Setting: Learning to say "no" to excessive demands and to protect one's own time and energy.
Deep Physiological and Emotional Regulation Techniques
In addition to quick relaxation techniques, chronic stress management benefits from deeper, more regular practices:
- Mindfulness and Meditation: These practices help develop greater awareness of the present moment, observe stressful thoughts and emotions without overreacting to them, and cultivate inner calm. Regular meditation can help "release subconscious burdens" and increase stress tolerance.
