Definition of Harassment in Video Games

Griefing is a term specific to the world of online multiplayer video games (MMOs, shooters, etc.) and literally translates as "causing grief" or "griefing". It is, in essence, bullying within a gaming environment.

It is defined as the deliberate and systematic act of a player (griefer) to ruin the gaming experience of other players, using the game's own mechanics and rules in an unsportsmanlike or abusive manner, without necessarily violating the game's code (which makes it difficult to report).

The goal of the griefer is not to win the game, but to derive pleasure from the frustration and anger of the other players.

While a competitive player plays to win, the griefer plays to destroy, annoy and humiliate.

It is a form of psychological harassment that takes refuge in the supposed anonymity and "virtual" nature of the environment.

Common Griefer Tactics

Griefing tactics vary from game to game, but share a pattern of abuse of power.

In collaborative games (such as Minecraft or League of Legends), the griefer may destroy creations that other players have invested hours in, steal items from the team, or "feed the enemy" (feeding), i.e., intentionally allowing themselves to be killed so that the opposing team wins, harming their own teammates.

Other tactics include blocking roads, preventing other players from advancing; deliberate "friendly fire" (attacking members of one's own team); or verbal harassment through voice or text chat, insulting, shouting or playing annoying music.

Also common is "resource hijacking", where the griefer hoards all the objects or areas needed to advance, preventing newcomers from progressing. The griefer enjoys the helplessness it generates in its victims.

Impact and Consequences (Beyond the Game)

The usual argument is "it's just a game," but the impact of griefing is real, especially on minors.

For many children and adolescents, the video game environment is their main socialization space, their digital "schoolyard".

Being a victim of griefing is equivalent to being bullied at recess: it generates anxiety, frustration, low self-esteem and a feeling of exclusion.

The victim may end up leaving a community and a hobby he or she was passionate about because of the harassment. In many cases, griefing does not stop at the game.

If the players meet in the real world (classma
