Transcription Empathy: Putting Yourself in Someone Else's Shoes

Empathy is an essential communication skill that goes beyond simply listening; is the ability to feel and understand the emotions and feelings of another.

Often, misunderstandings and conflicts arise because people do not take the time to understand the experience of their interlocutor, which causes communication to deteriorate.

Empathy opens the doors to healthier and more enriching relationships, as it allows us to connect with others on a deeper level.

Empathy can be colloquially defined as "putting yourself in the other person's shoes."

However, this definition can be superficial if its true magnitude is not understood.

Real empathy involves putting yourself in their shoes and walking a few miles, that is, trying to see the world from the other person's perspective, considering their history, experiences, points of view, and needs.

Only by doing this exercise of imagination can you truly understand why the other person feels the way they feel or thinks the way they think.

Empathy is not synonymous with agreeing.

This is a crucial distinction, as you can understand and respect someone's point of view without necessarily sharing it.

The key is validating the person's emotion, which makes them feel valued and understood.

A phrase like, "I understand how this may make you feel" is a powerful bridge that opens communication and builds trust, even in the midst of a disagreement.

A lack of empathy often stems from a tendency to assume what the other person feels or thinks.

You assume you know what's best for the other person without having actively listened to them.

Empathy requires suspending judgment and making a conscious effort to understand the other person's experience.

As Gandhi said, "Three-quarters of the misery and misunderstanding in the world would end if people would put themselves in their adversaries' shoes and understand their point of view."
