Personnel, Organizational and Human Factors Psychology

The field of I-O psychology is internally divided into three major specialties that work in an integrated manner.

The first, personnel psychology, manages the employee life cycle from recruitment to retirement, dealing with training and individual performance evaluations.

The second area is organizational psychology, which focuses on the influence of the collective on the employee, analyzing the internal climate, diversity, communication flows and group decision-making.

Finally, there is the psychology of human factors or psychological engineering, which studies the ergonomic relationship between people and the technological tools or machines that operate in their workday.

This specialty seeks to design equipment and physical environments that maximize safety and minimize human error, integrating engineering knowledge with laws of perception and sensation.

Beyond the classical branches, the discipline today addresses critical issues such as labor legality, industrial safety standards, and employment equity.

Today's specialists investigate the effect of new technologies on the worker's mind and how the internationalization of brands affects company culture.

There is a growing concern for physical health and the reduction of nervous tension, understanding that well-being is a prerequisite for operational excellence.

In addition, specific programs are being developed to encourage motivation and satisfaction, recognizing that the success of an intervention depends on understanding the background of thinking and behavior that each person carries over from their personal history into the office environment.

Training and the Practitioner-Scientist Model

The preparation of a practitioner in this area is intensive and generally requires advanced academic degrees, such as master's or doctoral degrees.

Training follows the "scientist-practitioner" model, which requires the expert to master both practical in-house execution and academic research methodology.

About forty percent of these specialists work in university environments teaching and creating new knowledge, while the majority work in the public or private sector applying these theories to optimize their organizations or as external consultants on a project basis.
