Transcription 10 cybersecurity tips for video games
Protect the Account (The Gateway)
A gamer's biggest asset is their account, where they store their games, their progress and often their credit card details.
The first tip is to create a strong and unique password. Never reuse your email or social media password.
If hackers steal a gaming platform's database (which happens), they will try that password everywhere.
The second and most important tip is to enable Two Factor Authentication (2FA).
Almost all platforms (Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, Epic Games) offer it.
This adds an extra layer of security (a code to your mobile) that prevents someone from getting in, even if they steal your password.
The Danger of Phishing and Illegal Software
Gamers are a prime target for phishing. The third tip is to be wary of "too good to be true" offers.
Hackers send fake emails that mimic the platform, offering free games, skins or virtual currencies (V-Bucks, Robux) if you click on a link and log in.
The link takes you to a cloned website where they steal your password. Never log in from a link in an email.
The fourth tip is not to download pirated software or cheats. This type of illegal software is the number one vehicle for infecting the computer with malware (viruses).
When the player installs an unofficial "mod" or cheat program, they are often installing a keylogger (which steals your passwords) or ransomware (which hijacks your computer).
Managing Personal Information and Payments
The fifth tip is identity management: never use your real name as a nickname in the game. A nickname must be anonymous.
The sixth tip is to never share personal information in voice or text chat (where you live, where you go to school).
Griefing and doxing start when the aggressor gets real-world data.
The seventh tip is to manage payments.
If a credit card is stored on the platform, it must be protected by 2FA.
It is preferable to use intermediate payment methods such as PayPal or prepaid cards, which do not expose the main bank details.
Eighth, set up privacy: most platforms allow you to hide your profile, your list of friends or your
