Isolation and Stalking

Strategies of Social and Geographic Disconnection

Isolation of the victim is not an unfortunate side effect of the abuse, but a primary and deliberate strategy of the perpetrator to ensure impunity and control.

For the "brainwashing" and manipulation to be effective, the abuser must eliminate all external references ("reality mirrors") that might contradict his narrative or empower the victim.

This is accomplished systematically by sowing discord with the family of origin ("they don't love us", "they get into everything"), provoking unfounded jealousy to alienate friendships, or forcing moves to places geographically distant from the support network.

By cutting off emotional ties, the victim loses her valid interlocutors; she no longer has anyone to tell her "this is not normal" or "you don't deserve this".

In the forced isolation modality, such as the "golden cage" phenomenon, the person can live in comfort but deprived of his freedom and autonomy to interact with the outside world, being totally at the mercy of the distorted vision of reality imposed by the aggressor.

Surveillance, Stalking and Digital Harassment

Stalking is a pattern of intrusive behavior that generates fear and a sense of omnipresence of the aggressor in the victim's life.

In the modern era, this violence has evolved into cyberstalking and digital surveillance, becoming a tool of constant terror.

Attackers use advanced technology, such as GPS in the car, spy apps on the cell phone (stalkerware) and obsessive monitoring of social networks, to know where the victim is at all times.

This panoptic surveillance makes the victim internalize control: even when the aggressor is not physically present, she modifies her behavior and behaves as if he is watching her, living in a state of permanent probation.

It is crucial to emphasize that stalking is not a romantic or harmless behavior; it is a predictor of high risk of severe physical violence and femicide, especially in the post-breakup stage, as it demonstrates the aggressor's obsession and absolute refusal to lose "ownership" and control over the victim.

Summary

Isolation is a deliberate strategy to ensure impunity. The aggressor eliminates external "mirrors of reality" such as friends and family, leaving the victim without valid interlocutors who can contradict his distorted and manipulative narrative.

Stalking uses surveillance to generate a sense of omnipresence. Using technology such as GPS and spyware, the aggressor controls the location of the victim, who ends up modifying her behavior as she feels permanently observed.

Far from being romantic, stalking is a predictor of high risk of femicide. This behavior demonstrates the aggressor's obsession and his absolute refusal to lose "ownership" and control over the victim's life.
