Transcription FLOW STATE ([THE ZONE])
Characteristics: merging action-consciousness and loss of ego.
The flow state, often called "being in the zone," is the holy grail of psychological performance.
It is characterized by a total absorption in the task, where action and consciousness merge.
The athlete ceases to be an observer of self; there is no self-doubt, self-criticism or awareness of the passage of time.
The movements feel automatic and effortless, despite the high physical demand.
A jazz drummer during an intense improvisation may experience this: his hands move at breakneck speed, but he is not consciously thinking about each stroke or note. He feels the music "playing through him."
Similarly, a climber on a difficult wall can enter into flow where there is only the next hold and the movement of his body, disappearing fear of height or concern for the audience, operating in a state of high-precision "autopilot."
Conditions necessary to facilitate entry into the zone
Although flow may seem elusive, there are psychological conditions that increase the likelihood of reaching it.
The three main ones are: clear goals (knowing exactly what is required at any given moment), immediate feedback (knowing if you are doing well) and, crucially, a balance between the challenge of the task and the skills of the individual.
For example, a skilled surgeon performing a complex but familiar operation is highly likely to go into flow because the challenge is high (requiring their full attention) and their skill is equally high.
In sports, a tennis player may enter the zone when he faces an opponent who demands his highest level but whom he feels he can beat. If the challenge is too low, there is boredom; if it is too high, there is anxiety.
The flow lies in that in-between channel of optimal challenge, enhanced by mental preparation that includes visualization and self-confidence.
Summary
The flow state is defined by total absorption in the present activity. In this condition, action and consciousness merge, with ego, self-doubt and self-criticism disappearing.
Movements are executed automatically and without sensation of effort. The athlete enters an "autopilot" mode of high precision, where the execution flows naturally in spite of the physical demand.
To reach this state, a perfect balance between challenge and skill is necessary. Clear goals and immediate feedback are also required, creating the ideal psychological conditions for peak performance and enjoyment.
