Transcription Empathy Journal Exercise

Empathy is a skill that, like any other, is strengthened with constant practice.

This exercise offers you a simple yet profound tool for cultivating greater self-awareness about how and when you practice empathy in your daily life.

By keeping track of your interactions, you will be able to observe the real impact of your empathic efforts on both yourself and others, making empathy a conscious habit rather than a sporadic reaction.

Goal of the Exercise

The main objective of this activity is to help you develop greater self-awareness about the empathy you practice in your daily interactions, allowing you to see its real impact and turn it into a stronger and more conscious skill.

Practice Instructions

Step 1: Keep a Journal for a Week

For the next seven days, commit to keeping an Empathy Journal. It doesn't need to be a special notebook; notes from your cell phone or a simple notebook will suffice.

The goal is to create a space dedicated to this reflection.

Step 2: Write down a Daily Situation

Each day, identify and write down at least one situation in which you have practiced empathy.

It could be a conversation with your partner, a moment with your children, an interaction with a colleague, or even a brief exchange with a stranger.

Step 3: Reflect on the Interaction

For each situation you write down, take a moment to answer the following reflection questions.

Be as honest as possible with yourself:

  • How did I practice active listening - was I fully focused on the other person or was I thinking about my response?
  • What emotions did I try to understand and validate in the other person, and was I able to identify what they were feeling beyond their words?
  • How did I feel when acting with empathy, did I experience greater connection, calmness, or perhaps discomfort.

Step 4: The Weekly Reflection

At the end of the week, take some time to review all of your notes and reflect on the experience as a whole. This overview will allow you to identify patterns and learnings.
