Transcription (e) engagement. the flow statement

The second element of the PERMA model, known as "Engagement", is defined primarily by the experience of "Flow".

This concept, researched and popularized by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, describes a state of mind in which a person is completely immersed and absorbed in the activity he or she is engaged in.

Central Flow Definition

The flow state, also called optimal experience, occurs when a person is so involved in a task that time seems to fly by and one loses track of oneself and one's immediate surroundings.

It is a state of deep concentration where activity becomes intrinsically rewarding.

It is not a conscious effort to concentrate, but a natural and effortless absorption in what you are doing.

Athletes often refer to this state as "being in the zone."

Flow Experience Characteristics

During a flow experience, the person feels that his or her abilities are in balance with the challenge presented by the activity; it is neither too easy (which would lead to boredom) nor too difficult (which would cause anxiety).

Attention is completely focused on the task, and worries, problems and distracting thoughts tend to fade away.

There is a loss of self-consciousness, where the person merges with the activity, and an altered perception of time, which often seems to pass much faster than normal, or there is a feeling that time stands still or expands.

Actions and thoughts flow in a coordinated manner and without apparent effort.

Importance for Well-Being

Flow experiences are highly pleasurable and are considered peak moments in a person's life.

Encouraging activities that allow entering this state is crucial for the "Engagement" component of the PERMA model and, therefore, for overall well-being.

By being fully engaged, you not only enjoy the activity itself.

It also develops skills and provides a sense of mastery and accomplishment.

The goal is to find and promote these "meditations in action", as they are sometimes called, to enrich daily life.
