Transcription Proxemics and Physical Contact (Haptics) in Business

Personal space management and social distances

Proxemics studies how we manage space and distance in our interactions.

In sales, respecting "personal space" (approximately 45 centimeters around the individual) is critical to not appearing invasive or aggressive.

A direct frontal approach can be intimidating; therefore, an effective technique is to stand slightly sideways, shoulder to shoulder, which reduces the physical distance without creating discomfort, facilitating closer collaboration.

The salesperson must be able to "read" the customer: if the customer subtly backs away, it is a clear sign that his or her comfort zone has been invaded and distance must be restored to regain trust.

Strategic use of physical contact (greetings, subtle touches).

Haptics, or physical contact, is a powerful but delicate tool. A firm, warm handshake at the beginning and end of a meeting establishes a professional bond and conveys security; conversely, cold hands can generate unconscious distrust.

An advanced technique to show greater cordiality, if the context permits, is the two-handed handshake (shaking the right hand while the left hand gently covers the client's hand).

In mixed-gender interactions, distances may be shortened more naturally depending on the rapport established.

In addition, it is vital to investigate the client's sociocultural context; what is a friendly gesture in one region may be offensive in another.

Appearance also communicates respect; dressing appropriately for the client's environment (e.g., "sport smart" at a business sporting event ra
