Transcription Sociometrics and group analysis
Using sociometric tests to understand group dynamics
Sociometry is an analytical tool, derived from Jacob Moreno's psychodrama, that allows us to measure and visualize the structure of relationships within a group.
Through a sociometric test, members are asked to express their preferences of attraction or rejection towards other members for specific activities, such as working on a project or sharing leisure time.
This method transforms invisible affective and functional relationships into quantifiable data.
Confidentiality is an absolute requirement to guarantee the honesty of the answers, allowing to discover the true cohesion or fragmentation of the group.
Identifying opinion leaders (stars) and isolated members
The analysis of the results is captured in a matrix and then in a sociogram, which is the graphical representation of the connections. This map reveals archetypal roles within the collective.
The "sociometric star" is the individual who receives the most positive choices, identified as the popular leader or most influential figure.
At the opposite extreme are the "isolates," who receive few or no choices, and the "rejects," who accumulate negative choices.
It is also possible to detect "gray eminences", people who directly influence the leader, and communication "chains" that show how information flows through the network.
Application for segmenting control groups in advertising
In the context of consumer psychology, sociometry transcends the analysis of human groups and is applied to product preference.
For example, a beverage company may present several flavor options to a control group and ask them to choose their favorites.
The product that receives the most choices becomes the "sociometric star" of the market, indicating what the focus of distribution and production should be to avoid shortages.
In addition, understanding the internal dynamics of a control group allows segmenting the audience to test specific advertising campaigns, ensuring that the message resonates with the opinion leaders who will influence the rest
