Brain activity recording techniques offer marketing teams a direct window into mental processes that surveys and focus groups do not always capture: attention, emotion, memory and decision-making. Two of the most widely used tools in this area are electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Knowing their capabilities, differences and limitations allows us to design more robust studies and translate neuroscientific findings into actionable insights for campaigns, packaging and product experiences.
EEG records electrical activity generated by cortical neurons using electrodes placed on the scalp. It captures rapid changes in milliseconds, making it ideal for measuring temporal responses to advertising stimuli such as images, sounds or messages.
Useful metrics include the strength and frequency of oscillations (e.g., alpha, beta waves), evoked potentials, and measures of synchrony between regions. These signals are associated with states of attention, cognitive load, emotional processing and recognition, key aspects for evaluating the effectiveness of creative and experiences.
fMRI measures changes in cerebral blood flow (BOLD) that reflect neuronal activity. It provides high-resolution spatial images of which areas of the brain are activated by a stimulus, although with less temporal resolution than EEG.
fMRI makes it possible to identify regions involved in reward, memory, and emotional appraisal-for example, the nucleus accumbens or the prefrontal cortex. This helps to understand not only whether an advertisement generates response but what kind of processes (emotional, evaluative, reward) are involved.
EEG identifies peaks of attention and cognitive load during key scenes; fMRI reveals whether a message activates reward systems or memory-related areas. Combined, they reveal which parts of a spot capture attention and which generate recall or preference.
Testing design variants with EEG can indicate which is more eye-catching; fMRI can indicate whether a design increases perceived value or generates persistent positive emotions. This helps prioritize changes before launch.
Both techniques can be applied to analyze how consumers process information on websites, in stores or during product trials, identifying cognitive bottlenecks or components that facilitate the decision.
Interpretation requires understanding that a brain signal is not equivalent to a direct conscious intention. For example, greater amplitude in a specific band may indicate greater attention, but this needs to be contextualized with the task and behavioral measures. Common metrics include attentional indices, response latency, activation in reward regions, and measures of differentiation between stimuli.
A recommended approach is to look for convergence: if EEG shows peaks of attention at a key time and fMRI indicates activation in memory or reward areas, there is greater confidence that that fragment of the stimulus is relevant to the consumer's decision.
From a methodological standpoint, neither EEG nor fMRI guarantees infallible predictions of behavior. Findings are probabilistic and depend on design, sample and context. Ethically, it is crucial to obtain informed consent, explain how the data will be used, and guarantee privacy. Avoid interpreting signals as "mind reading" and communicate results rigorously to avoid misunderstandings.
EEG and fMRI offer complementary perspectives for understanding mental processes relevant to marketing: the former brings speed and ease of use in more natural settings; the latter, spatial precision to identify brain circuits involved in emotion, memory and judgment. By integrating these techniques with traditional methods and maintaining an ethical and business-driven approach, marketing teams can transform scientific findings into more effective creative and strategic decisions.
