Transcription Starting my coaching business at home

Companies have been starting from home for a long time. Not only have the big tech companies of recent years started from a garage or a house. The difference today is that the home does not function only as an incubator for the birth of these ventures, but often serves as their final headquarters.

All this is thanks to the rapid advance of technologies, especially communication technologies. Until now, it has not been so easy to exchange information without having to leave the house. Today, many coaches are experiencing great success in the market with their business based at home.

Advantages of working from home

Today, more than 50% of all businesses within the United States are run from their owners' homes. This is thanks to the many advantages it offers.

It avoids having to commute from one place to another. This saves a valuable amount of time every day. If, for example, commuting to the office daily takes you approximately 30 minutes, this would add up to a total of 250 hours per year. You would save 6 weeks in total each year.

Also, if you think about it, business owners usually work more irregular hours than normal, so working from home makes it exponentially easier to be available at any time.

Working from home also saves a good amount of money that would usually be spent on renting office space and transportation. You avoid spending on additional services such as office supplies, gasoline, vehicle maintenance, etc.

It gives you great flexibility in your schedule, which allows you to maintain a healthy personal life and handle personal problems as they arise. If, for example, you work in an office from 8 to 5 and a family member falls ill, you would have to reorganize your work to be able to take care of the situation. On the other hand, if you work from home, it would be much easier to do both at the same time. Not that you'll be able to do both at the same time optimally, but at least you'll have more flexibility to manage your schedule.

Can I start my coaching business from home?

You should also keep in mind that many businesses and homes are not ideal for this business model. That's why before you start your home-based business, you should analyze calmly to adapt to your specific conditions.

And even if you run your business from home, this does not make it immune to bureaucratic rules and laws. In addition, home-based businesses have specific tax statutes that you should take into account before making a decision.

To start a home-based business you must consider all the general aspects of any business, including the ability to create a quality product or service that will attract a profitable number of customers. You must organize all the elements of the venture, from the financials to the marketing of the products or services efficiently.

That is why before starting this model you must ask yourself: Is my home coaching business feasible for my family and me? You should conduct a rigorous market study to assist you in answering this question, in addition to answering the following questions:

  • Do I feel comfortable and confident managing clients from my home?
  • Does my home look professional enough?
  • Is there sufficient Internet speed, electrical installations and other technical specifications necessary to run the business from my home?

In case I plan to carry out other activities, such as expanding my products or services, writing a book, among others, does my home have the necessary characteristics for the storage and management of these media? And, in case you are renting, will the owner of the house give me permission to start the business from there?

You might think that one of the main reasons to start your business from home would be money. And it is true that doing it that way will save you a considerable amount of money, but you cannot be blinded and start it if it is not compatible with your home and your family. If you had planned to start from home and when answering the above questions you come to the conclusion that this is not possible, then you must reorganize your business plan to minimize spending on other aspects and that you reach the budget.

Balancing your time

Many coaches, when starting out, prefer to do so through self-employment in order to spend more time with their children and family. This is also why they choose to work from home. But before you make any decisions, you should know that running a full-time business from home will not give you the time you imagine spending with your children or family.

The key to achieving this lies in finding the right balance. When you have a child in the house, especially a small one, it will not allow you to have uninterrupted meetings, phone calls, teleconferences, etc. Don't try to run a full-time business alongside your family and parenting duties at the same time.

You can start a part-time business at the same time you are caring for your children or family members. In this case it is possible to balance the two at the same time, as long as the business is part-time. It would be very difficult for you to take care of your children and maintain a full-time business at the same time. It is not that it is totally impossible, but you are going to wear yourself out too much and you will not be able to maintain that rhythm for a long time, which will determine to a great extent the success of your business.

If your business is already well established, you can gradually reduce the time you spend on it or hire assistants to take away your workload so you can devote more time to your family. But when you start building your business, those first few months will require your full attention and time to make it a success. Keep all this in mind if you are thinking of leading a family life and running a full-time business from home.

Many new entrepreneurs must be very creative with their time management, especially at the beginning of their businesses. They must rely on their partners and family members to be able to work from home with as few interruptions as possible. Others split child-rearing time with their part-time jobs. In these cases, for example, the father may start his job early in the morning while the mother takes care of the children and switch in the afternoon. This can undoubtedly exhaust and stress both parents, but it is a variation that allows them to do both.

Even if you don't have children or people to take care of, you should always balance your time so that work doesn't absorb you completely. This will not be healthy in the long run. People who have not started a business or are entrepreneurs usually have no idea of the amount of time and resources needed to start a business from scratch. That's why it's up to you to manage your time properly to dedicate time to all aspects of your life.
