Mental Support Beyond the Senses

In addition to objects that stimulate your five senses, your self-soothing box can contain tools for mental support.

These items are not focused on the sensory, but rather on providing guidance and occupation for your mind in times of crisis.

They are reminders and activities that help you shift your focus and strengthen your internal dialogue in a positive way.

The Calming Technique Cards. Your Crisis Guide

It's a great idea to create little cards where you write down the calming techniques that work best for you.

Often, when we experience a spike in anxiety, our brain shuts down and we completely forget the tools we've learned.

These cards act as an immediate and easy reminder of what you can do to calm yourself right now.

You could write down the steps for a breathing exercise or the instructions for a present-day anchoring technique.

Having this guide handy takes the pressure off of remembering what to do when you're feeling overwhelmed and confused.

Affirmation Cards. Strengthening Your Inner Strength

You can also create a set of cards with positive affirmations and inspirational quotes that are meaningful to you.

The goal of these cards is to counteract the negative self-talk that often accompanies anxiety.

You can read these phrases out loud, or even while looking in a mirror, to enhance their effect on your mind.

Another very powerful option is to include letters or notes from friends and family that remind you of your good qualities.

Reading the appreciation that others have for you can be a wonderful boost to your self-esteem during times of doubt.

Creative and Mentally Focusing Activities

Including an activity that keeps you busy and focused can be a very helpful way to relieve anxiety and stress.

You can have a small coloring book with some pencils, as this is a relaxing and very rewarding activity.

A notebook to write down your feelings, a Sudoku book, or A ball of knitting needle is also a great option.

These activities help you channel your mental energy into a specific task, distracting you from worries and fears.
