Personal and Couple-Related Barriers
The big myth: “What if, by talking to them about sex, I give them too many ideas and ‘awaken’ their curiosity too soon?”
The factual reality: Numerous studies show that comprehensive and early sex education delays the onset of sexual activity and increases contraceptive use.
Why: Providing accurate information removes the morbid mystery. When you understand how something works and the risks involved, you stop romanticizing it.
Not giving them “ideas” at home means they’ll get them from the internet, social media, or uninformed friends.
What if my partner and I have completely opposing approaches or opinions on how to teach sex education?
The problem: Conflicting messages create deep confusion in children, who may learn to manipulate the situation by seeking out the more “permissive” parent.
The solution: As with any other aspect of parenting, you need consensus “behind closed doors.”
You should sit down and agree on some non-negotiable minimums based on health and safety.
If the impasse is insurmountable, it’s highly recommended to seek out a counselor or family therapist to help mediate, always remembering that the common goal is the child’s well-being, not who’s right.
I feel a paralyzing sense of shame when talking about this—is it really that bad if I just let them learn about it in high school sex ed classes?
The emotional reality: Your shame is valid and normal; it stems from the way you were raised. However, it is a problem to leave it entirely to others.
Why high school isn’t enough: School presentations tend to focus on biology (reproductive systems) and risks (STIs, unwanted pregnancies).
They lack the components of affection, respect, family values, and intimacy, which are only taught at home.
What to do if you get stuck: If you can’t find the right words, bring in outside help.
Watch a documentary with them, give them a good, age-appropriate book on sex education, and tell them: “I find it really hard to talk about these topics because no one ever explained them to me, but I want you to have all the information.
Read this book, and if there’s anything that worries you, come find me and we’ll look at it tog
