The Lens Through Which We See the World

A mindset is not a passing thought.

It is a core belief or fundamental assumption we have about an aspect of life.

It acts as a lens through which we interpret the world.

This often unconscious belief powerfully guides our expectations, our explanations for why things happen, and ultimately, the goals we set for ourselves.

A Clear Example. The Stress Mindset

Let's take stress as an example.

If your mindset is that "stress is harmful and debilitating," when you're faced with a stressful situation, your expectation will be to feel bad, your explanation will be that stress is harming you, and your goal will be to avoid it at all costs.

If, on the other hand, your mindset is that "stress is an opportunity for growth," your expectations, explanations, and goals will be completely different.

It's Not Positive Thinking, It's Real Belief: It's crucial to understand that a mindset is not the same as superficial "positive thinking" or "wishful thinking."

It's not about repeating statements that we don't believe. A mindset is what we truly believe to be true at this moment.

It may or may not be accurate, but to us, it feels like reality.
