This methodological limitation means that infections caused by this bacterium are frequently overlooked or mistakenly attributed to other, more common microbial agents, such as the bacteria that cause chlamydia or gonorrhea.
When given an incorrect clinical diagnosis, patients are subjected to conventional antibiotic regimens that target bacterial cell wall synthesis, which are completely ineffective against this particular pathogen.
