In both cases, unplanned interruptions or missed doses dramatically reduce drug concentration in vulnerable tissues, creating windows of biological susceptibility during which the virus can evade the protective barrier and infect immune cells.
Clinical Follow-ups and Periodic Testing
The medical follow-up protocol for users of pre-exposure prophylaxis requires systematic monitoring scheduled every three months.
The primary objective of these periodic consultations is to reconfirm the patient’s seronegative status through state-of-the-art laboratory testing.
This constant verification is essential to prevent the inadvertent administration of prophylactic therapy in the presence of a recent seroconversion, a situation that would lead to the development of antiretroviral-resistant viral strains.
Additionally, clinical follow-up includes regular assessment of renal function by measuring serum creatinine levels and the glomerular filtration rate, as certain components of the medication can cause changes in kidney tissue.
Furthermore, each quarterly visit provides an opportunity for comprehensive screening for other urogenital and rectal bacterial infections, enabling timely diagnosis and immediate treatment of asymptomatic conditions.
