According to articles 10 to 35 of the European Regulation No. 1169-2011, except for some exceptions, the following aspects must appear compulsorily on food labeling:

  • Name of the food.
  • List of the components of the product.
  • Those components, processing aids or derivatives used in the preparation of food, appearing in Annex II of the regulation, identified as causing food intolerances or allergies. Whether they are present in the final product in a modified form or not.
  • The amounts of each ingredient or categories of ingredients.
  • Net content of the food.
  • Expiration date.
  • Conditions under which they are to be used and storage requirements.
  • The identity, corporate purpose and address of the food entity.
  • Origin or country of origin.
  • If the correct use of the product is complex, instructions for use should be included.
  • For beverages with an alcohol content higher than 1.2%, the alcohol content obtained must be specified.
  • Nutritional information and properties.

In order to comply with Article 35 of the regulation, all these mandatory statements must be reported using numbers or words, and in some cases by means of symbols or pictograms.
